"About five years ago my students stopped taking notes,” Rankin said. “I asked, ‘Why are you not taking notes?’ And they said, ‘Why would we take notes on that?…. I can go to Wikipedia or go to Google, and I can get all the information I need."

Unpacking My Library: Architects and Their Books

I just received a wonderful gift. This special someone knows I love collecting books, and thought this one would be a great addition to my library. Coincidently its about ten architects and their personal libraries they have been creating since their days as architecture students and/or early architectural professionals. On that note, I thought it would be fun to share 5 recently published books that hopefully I plan to get very soon and maybe for you to consider for your personal library. Here they are below in no particular order.

Yes is More: An Archicomic of Architectural Evolution by Bjarke Ingels/BIG

Is this the new “S M L XL” manifesto for this generation of architects? Not sure, but get it before it becomes an overpriced collectors item selling on Ebay for 10x its original amount.

Mona Kuhn: Native

When I was in L.A. back in October I visited the M+B Gallery to see Andrew Bush’s Vector Portraits. In the back room storage area I noticed an incredible portrait, exactly like the one in the image to the left, lying against the wall.  I found out later the gallery was preparing for Mona Kuhn’ Native. Unfortunately I left L.A. before the opening of the exhibit. Thankfully, there is her book to compensate.

Urbanisms: Working with Doubt by Steven Holl

Back in February 2008 I saw Steven Holl lecture at The Great Hall/Cooper Union. He spoke about his new book and how it was broken down into 11 points or chapters, all revolving around the notion of doubt in science, architecture, and urbanism. If you have his first two books, Intertwining and Anchoring, Urbanisms is a great addition to the collection.

Looking In: Robert Frank’s The Americans Expanded Edition

After seeing the exhibition at The Met earlier this year, this catalog is a definite must have for anyone who appreciates photography. The included contact sheets alone are worth the purchase.

Studio Culture: The Secret life of Graphic Design Studio by Unity Editions

Just scanned through this book the other day. High quality work from some high quality graphic designers, but it is the interviews with the designers that left a great impression. Very inspirational for those who are questioning to leave their corporate jobs and try make it on their own.
